Agent Chat Guide
Agent Chat Guide
Agent Chat is a built-in conversational assistant that helps you modify your app and manage data -- all through natural language. Instead of configuring things manually, just tell the agent what you want.
Opening Agent Chat
- Open any app in the workspace editor.
- Click the Agent Chat button in the toolbar.
- The editor splits into two panels: your app on the left and the chat panel on the right.
If you installed the app from a template, Agent Chat opens automatically so you can start customizing right away.
How It Works
When you type a message, the agent:
- Reads your app's current structure (data tables, fields, layout, actions)
- Decides how to fulfill your request
- Makes the changes
- Explains what was modified
Your app on the left updates in real time as the agent works. You can watch changes appear as they happen.
What You Can Ask
Here are common things you can ask the agent to do:
Changing Your App's Structure
- "Add a priority column to my tasks table"
- "Create a new table for customer feedback with name, email, and message fields"
- "Change the heading text to 'Q1 Sales Report'"
- "Add a bar chart showing revenue by month"
- "Remove the notes field from the projects table"
- "Add a form to submit new expense entries"
- "Rename the 'amt' field to 'amount' in the expenses table"
- "Show the email field in the customers table display"
- "Add a pie chart of expenses by category"
Managing Your Data
- "Show me all the records in the orders table"
- "How many orders do I have?"
- "Add a task called 'Review proposal' with high priority"
- "Mark the first task as completed"
- "Delete the test record I just created"
- "Clear all the sample data from the contacts table"
Asking Questions
- "What tables does my app have?"
- "What fields does the orders table have?"
- "How many records are in the contacts table?"
- "Find the chart that shows revenue data"
Available Tools
The agent has 19 tools organized into two categories: tools that change your app's structure and tools that manage your data.
Structure Tools (13)
These tools modify your app -- its tables, fields, layout, and actions.
| Tool | What it does |
|---|---|
| Read app | Reads the current app structure. The agent uses this automatically when it needs to understand your app. |
| Add table | Creates a new data table with fields. |
| Add field | Adds a new field to an existing table. |
| Remove field | Removes a field from a table. Destructive -- see safety notes. |
| Update field | Changes a field's name, type, or whether it is required. |
| Add table column | Adds a visible column to a data table display. |
| Remove table column | Removes a visible column from a data table display. |
| Update component | Changes the properties of any UI component (text, colors, sizes, etc.). |
| Add action | Creates a new action (form submission, data operation, API call). |
| Update action | Updates an existing action's configuration. |
| Add component | Adds a new UI component to your app (tables, charts, cards, text, etc.). |
| Remove component | Removes a UI component and all its children. Destructive -- see safety notes. |
| Find component | Searches for components by type, text, or data binding. The agent uses this internally to locate components before modifying them. |
Data Tools (6)
These tools manage the records (rows) stored in your app's data tables.
| Tool | What it does |
|---|---|
| List records | Shows up to 20 records from a table. Long text values are shortened to keep the chat readable. |
| Count records | Counts the total number of records in a table without showing the data. |
| Create record | Adds a new record to a table. |
| Update record | Updates specific fields of an existing record. |
| Delete record | Deletes a single record by its ID. Destructive -- see safety notes. |
| Delete all records | Deletes every record in a table permanently. Destructive -- see safety notes. |
Adding Charts
When you ask for a chart, the agent adds it to your app automatically. Four chart types are supported:
| Chart Type | Best For | Example Prompt |
|---|---|---|
| Bar chart | Comparing values across categories | "Add a bar chart showing total sales by month" |
| Line chart | Tracking trends over time | "Add a line chart tracking daily signups over time" |
| Area chart | Showing volume trends | "Add an area chart of weekly revenue" |
| Pie chart | Showing proportions | "Add a donut chart of expenses by category" |
For bar, line, and area charts, you can specify the X-axis field, Y-axis field, and optional grouping. For pie charts, you can specify the label field and value field. You can also request colors and whether a pie chart should be a donut.
Destructive Operations
Some operations cannot be undone. The agent is designed to protect you from accidental data loss:
Operations that require confirmation
| Operation | What the agent will do before executing |
|---|---|
| Remove field | Tell you which UI components will be affected by removing this field, and ask you to confirm |
| Remove component | Explain that the component and all its children will be removed, and ask for confirmation |
| Delete record | Ask you to confirm which record will be deleted |
| Delete all records | Emphasize that all records will be permanently deleted and cannot be recovered. Ask you to confirm by repeating the table name |
If the agent does not ask for confirmation before a destructive action, you can say "wait" or "stop" before it proceeds.
Version safety net
Even if a structural change goes wrong, you can always revert to a previous version using the History button in the toolbar. Data deletions, however, cannot be reverted -- deleted records are gone permanently.
Choosing an AI Model
Agent Chat uses the same AI model system as app creation. You can choose which model powers the agent:
- At the bottom of the chat panel, select a model from the dropdown before sending a message.
- The platform default (Gemini 2.5 Flash) is free and works well for most modifications.
- If you have a BYOK key configured, you can use any of the supported models (GPT-4o, Claude, Gemini 2.5 Pro, OpenRouter models, etc.).
Your model choice applies per-message, so you can switch between models during a conversation.
Rate Limits
Agent Chat is rate-limited to protect platform stability:
| Tier | Per-Minute Limit | Daily Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Free | 15 messages | 200 messages |
| BYOK | 30 messages | Unlimited |
Each conversation supports up to 50 messages. If you need to continue working on an app after reaching the limit, close and reopen Agent Chat to start a fresh conversation.
The Modify Bar
In addition to Agent Chat, you can also modify your app using the modify bar at the bottom of the editor. The modify bar is a single-prompt interface -- type a change, click Modify, and the AI updates your app.
Agent Chat vs Modify Bar:
| Agent Chat | Modify Bar | |
|---|---|---|
| Style | Multi-turn conversation | Single prompt |
| Best for | Complex changes, exploring your app, multi-step modifications | Quick one-off changes |
| Data access | Can read, create, update, and delete records | Structure changes only |
| Context | Remembers the conversation history | Each prompt is independent |
Both use the same AI models and produce the same quality of results. Use whichever feels more natural for the task at hand.
Tips for Better Results
- Be specific -- "Add a 'due date' field to the tasks table" works better than "add dates".
- One change at a time -- the agent handles complex requests, but single-step instructions are more reliable.
- Use natural language -- you do not need to know technical terms. Say "add a column" or "add a chart" and the agent figures out the rest.
- Check the result -- the rendered app on the left updates in real time. Verify the change looks right before asking for the next one.
- Ask questions -- the agent can explain your app's current structure. Try "What fields does the orders table have?" or "How many records are in the contacts table?"
Limitations
- Agent Chat modifies only the app you have open. It cannot access other apps in your workspace.
- The agent cannot upload images, access external websites, or run code.
- Chart configurations may need fine-tuning -- if a chart does not look right, ask the agent to adjust the fields or chart type.
- The agent cannot undo data deletions. Use the History button for structural reverts only.
- Each conversation supports up to 50 messages and 10,000 characters per message.
